Exodus 3:14 - God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM."
1 Corinthians 15:10 - But by the grace of God I am what I am...
Our God is. He is. This phrase is where the Jews got the name Yahweh for God. The most holy word in their language. They held this word for their God in special regard. It was not used carelessly or foolishly. It was sacred. The phrase and the name tell us how God is fully independent and firmly unchanging. There is nothing higher to describe him by. He is the highest and the fullest.
Compare this against Paul's statement. By the grace of God, Paul is what he is. Paul's being is fully dependent upon the grace of God. God is the rock upon which Paul's being is built. God is the firm center, Paul is dependent upon that rock to create and sustain. The whole universe is sustained by this God, every moment.
This may seem like a silly look at similar phrasings, but I think it is important that we watch to guard this creature-Creator distinction and remember that our God made us in his image, but that He is infinitely higher.
And this God came and lived among us. How precious a truth. Depend on this God for your identity today and thank him for his becoming like us.
