What must we do?

caution.jpg

Hebrews 2:1-3

Therefore, we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.  For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation?

Hebrews starts off with praising Jesus.  Read through verses 1-4 of chapter one sometime and just list out all that it says about Jesus.  I cannot resist putting verse 3 here written out for you (if you sometimes skip verse citations if they are not reproduced when recommended as I sometimes do):

He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by his word of power.

This Jesus, who is the exact imprint of God's nature, who is the radiance of the glory of God, who upholds the whole UNIVERSE by his word, his word of power, this is the Jesus who was sent to us by God.  God sent us this Jesus, not a mere angel (though people are often scared of them, and sometimes worship them mistaking them for God).

So chapter one compares Jesus to the angels.  It finds Jesus vastly and incomparably superior, especially when you compare what God has said of them (verses 5-13).  14 gives us a view of the office of angels.

Then chapter two gives us an application of this.
Therefore (since chapter 1), we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard...

The point that all of this is that because Jesus has been sent to us, this great Jesus who is the radiance of the glory of God, we must pay closer attention.  We must treat this salvation as something of great importance and situate it at the front of our attention.

This should be especially useful to all those on Spring Break, as we are blessed now with much time, and we must steward it carefully.  Look at the outcome that this should help against:

lest we drift away from it.

This is serious stuff.  Steward your time carefully.  Jesus himself has been sent.
