12Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. 13But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called "today," that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 14For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.
From Hebrews 4:
11Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience. 12For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
This is a long passage that took me forever to come to any grips on during my devotion recently. It speaks of how some people were not allowed to enter into the promised land because of their unbelief and disobedience. That is what the "rest" is that is spoken of in 4:11. It quotes Psalm 95, also speaking of rest and how there is a future rest. So what do these verses have to do with Florida? Or Nashville? Or the open road? (wherever you spend your spring break)
It tells us that we must exhort one another. We all need encouragement. We must press on and sometimes it is hard. Having believers push you is a huge grace of being involved in the church and Christian fellowship.
It tells us that we must ourselves strive. Picture a runner. They are striving for the goal. So must we.
It tells us of the usefulness of the Word of God. It can help us and show us if we are being true.
Finally, in a scary verse, it reminds us of the end of time. We all must give an account. This should effect how we live. No creature can hide. We are all exposed.
13And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
